if one of you is australian and the other isn't, sooner or later you meet the partner visa. and the first thing you learn is that the sticker price is not the price.

the application fee is the headline number, but it's not the total. here's what actually stacks up.
what the money actually goes on
- the application fee. the big one, thousands of dollars, paid upfront, non-refundable. yes even if you get rejected. no we don't want to talk about it.
- health checks. panel doctor appointments, per person costs, and they expire if the wait runs long (see: the wait).
- police certificates. one per country you've lived in. lived in three countries? congratulations, three certificates, three fees, three different bureaucracies.
- translations and certifications. if any documents aren't in english.
- the evidence. printing, statutory declarations from friends, and the general admin of proving to a government that your love is real. surreal experience. keep every boarding pass.
the cost nobody puts in the brochure: the wait
processing times are measured in seasons. during that time you're either on a bridging visa figuring out work rights, or still apart paying for flights and two rents.
the visa fee you pay once. the waiting you pay monthly.
that's why our savings guide treats the in-between buffer as its own bucket. for australia moves it's often bigger than the visa itself.
what we'd tell past us
- start the police certificates early. they're slow and they're the thing that stalls applications.
- screenshot everything as you go. building two years of relationship evidence retroactively is misery. a shared album and the discord server export are gold.
- date the finances. joint accounts, shared bills, anything with both names and a date on it starts the clock on "genuine and continuing."
- NZ citizens, breathe. the trans-tasman arrangement means kiwis generally live and work in australia without any of this.
