Close the Distance

our discord server is our apartment: a room-by-room tour

jump to a section

every long distance couple has one. the private server. two members. created at 2am during month one, now load-bearing infrastructure for the entire relationship.

ours has fourteen channels. for two people. and every single one earns its place. welcome, let us show you around. shoes off.

πŸ“·the channel sidebar, lightly censored, because some channel names are between us and god

the living room: #general

where everything happens. good morning texts, the 400-message days, the 4-message days (those are fine too, see the parallel-time thing). if our relationship has a physical address, it's this channel.

it's not a chat log. it's a lease we both signed.

the kitchen: #dinner-pics

we eat "together" on call, so this is where the plates get photographed first. rule: no judging each other's 11pm instant noodles. this rule is violated weekly.

πŸ“·side-by-side dinner pics from the same call, two timezones, two very different levels of effort

the cinema: #watching

the queue, the schedule, the reaction threads. pinned message: the sacred list of shows we are NOT allowed to watch without the other person. violating the pin list is the closest thing our relationship has to a criminal offence.

the games room: #co-op

session planning, screenshots, and the standings from every game we play. current lifetime score in everything competitive: disputed. it will always be disputed. the dispute IS the game.

fourteen channels for two people is not excessive. it's interior design.

the study: #plans

the serious one. flight prices, visa research links, screenshots from the calculator, the countdown. it used to be the scariest channel. now it's the best one, because it stopped being "someday" and started being a list of steps.

the hallway shrine: #us

photos. screenshots of nice messages. the unhinged inside-joke images that would require a 45-minute explanation for any outsider. this channel is why the server can never, ever be deleted.

the balcony: voice channel, always-on

named "the balcony" because that's what it is, the place you sit together saying nothing. muted-but-present is a love language. the call stays open while we cook, study, game, exist. some nights the call is eight hours and maybe forty words.

the point of the tour

we built all this because the real apartment, the one with one rent, one kitchen, zero timezones, needs a number and a date before it's real.

the server is free. the apartment has a price. we know ours now, down to the month. go find yours, then make it a pinned message in your own #plans.

Now run your own numbers

See exactly what closing the distance would cost the two of you β€” free, about two minutes.

pip flew 8,000km to fact-check this. metaphorically.
